Driller Killer: Cold, cheap and disconnected

09/12/07  ||  Kampfar

If you are familiar with the name Driller Killer, it is most likely because of the movie, a cult one at it, released in 1979. It’s a good name, both for a violent flick and a likewise band, but if you wonder whether the movie is any good or hyped for unfathomable reasons, I wouldn’t know. I guess the latter, but I prefer to be sure, so I head onto talking about the band instead.

Driller Killer hails from Sweden, or Skåne as I’m sure the members would have insisted, and are said to be heavily influenced by a combo named Discharge. I have heard exactly squat from said band but I’d nonetheless like to thank them for inspiring my favorite hard core band, or was it crust punk, or maybe metal core, perhaps a mix of all? Fuck knows and cares very little, all I know is they don’t sound anything like Hatebreed or any of them three named bands. Not even close.

“Cold, cheap and disconnected” is an assault from the very start, kicked into gear by a short intro which asks a very good question, one I couldn’t answer even with a gun to my head. The only letups are “I love playing with fire,” a Joan Jett cover, good one too, and the ender, “In the name of namedropping.” Apart from that you’ll pretty much be bombarded by up-tempo riffs, rhythms and solos topped by a barker with a keen take on the art. Mind you, there aren’t any blasts here but the relentless “I’ll-not-let-go-of-your-throat” attitude make sure it is more intense than 95% of the blastfests out there.

It would take a real stubborn cunt to deny the songs on “Cold, cheap and disconnected” not being a bit samey, but the things is they always keep it fresh by adding sweet licks, developing the riffs, chugging them a bit different and so forth, making it really fucking hard for you to get bored. And all is wrapped up in a delightful production with lots of stomp and oomph, even some grit, just perfect for their music, making their every effort worthwhile.

“Fuck the world with an A.I.D.S infected penis” says the lyrics, and I couldn’t agree more. If you need a boost of energy you needn’t look further.
